Most people think that animals are sentient but plants are not. The book however claims that plants experience emotions and thoughts and that plants can read human minds. The Washington Post and Newsweek once reviewed the book favorably though it has often been considered to be pseudo-scientific.
This fascinating book roams...over that marvelous no man's land of mystical glimmerings into the nature of science and life itself. ーThe Washington Post
Floranium lamps, which were inspired by Cleve Backster’s polygraph tests with plants in the book, have been created. You can interact with your green plants using the lamps! WOW!
I have suspected for a long time that plants can somehow understand human emotions. I once had the honor of interviewing Dr. Yuji Dogane ( 銅金裕司 ), who let me listen to the hidden voices of some orchids which were extracted from the data of slight changes of electric potential found on the surface of their leaves. The sound I heard was enigmatic but at the same time interesting. It was made possible by an apparatus called a “Plantron” which was developed by him. If you are interested in it, watch the youtube video here ( it is in Japanese but you can hear the music-like plant voices).
The Extrasensory perception of plants
When reading what Luther Burbank, an American botanist and horticulturist who developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants, once said about plants, I smell a new future coming in which we can appreciate more bountiful blessings of plants by having some kind of communication with them.
Autumn leaves are now falling and whirling around and paths are covered with a soft carpet of fallen leaves. When I step on dead leaves and hear them crunch, I often drift into humming “Autumn Leaves”. In town many versions of the French song "Les Feuilles mortes (Yves Montand): Dead Leaves, the English title of the song is Autumn Leaves” can be heard sometimes in French and in English and sometimes in Japanese. This song has been very popular in Japan since its first release in France in 1945. I love the 2010 Eric Clapton jazzy version of the song as well as the original.

Listen patiently, quietly and reverently to the lessons, one by one, which Mother Nature has to teach, shedding light on that which was before a mystery, so that all who will, may see and know.-Luther Burbank

I am not sure they can understand our emotions but they certainly react to our level and quality of vital energy, a bit in the matter of pearls. Plants and pearls seem to be thriving with some people and die with others...do they tell us something about our health status!?
I've always felt plants are alive as much as anything else on this earth and have a hard time with the kind of thinking that says it is okay to eat vegetables but not okay to eat meat. They do indeed seem to be sentient beings in that they seem to have an awareness of their surroundings. I think God is in everything including rocks. :-)
Great photos!
Me encanta la alegría de las señoritas... se las ve como bellas flores tan encantadoras en el paisaje

Sapphire, maybe it is difficult to make the distinction between what happens really with plants and the projection of our own emotions or imagination on the nature, but it is important to keep open-minded. So I just say that, as I don't have any experience of that sort, it seems strange to me, but why not consider that everything can interact? We feel safe, relax and happy in nature, it is a certitude. What about the way some beautiful gardens are
made? It is a big and interesting subject to think of, isn't it?
Anne
Lovely pictures, Sapphire. I think it's the transience of autumn that makes it like a welcome second spring. Summer and winter often drag on forever, or so it seems.
I wouldn't doubt at all that plants have some form of communication, and why wouldn't it be as some form of music? If only we could understand their vibrational frequency a little better.
Autumn Leaves is one of my favorite songs too. It reminds me of my dad who played it on the mandolin and either accompanied himself by whistling or singing the words.
Oh my goodness you have the most beautiful photographs. I remember reading The Secret Life of Plants many years ago then a few years ago looked for it in print and couldn't find it, maybe I can find it now. I do believe it is true, all living things have feelings in one way or another.
This is a long-time lurker finally commenting to say I love that Camus quote. I don't know if plants have emotions, but in autumn they certainly elicit many in me! PS: Thanks for a great blog.
DeeBeeL.
"do they tell us something about our health status!?" As far as I know, the book doesn't refer to anything about it. One thing tranparently clear is the healing power of plants have always been GREAT!

Thanks! "they seem to have an awareness of their surroundings" Yes. it must be true. I'll add a BBC video about it to the post later.

Thanks! They were taking a walk in the garden after a wedding reception.

Thanks, Anne! "it is important to keep open-minded" I agree with you. As Lisa Randall says, "It's hubris to think that the way we see things is everything there is."

Thanks! I'm very glad to know that you love the song. I was really surprised to find that so many singers sing this great song in many languages!! Playing it on the mandolin would be lovely!

Thanks! Bingo! I thought you may have read the book!! It is really interesting, isn't it? I once lost myself in reading it.

Welcome and thanks so much for commenting! Cherry trees in fact bloom twice a year; cherry blossoms in spring and red shining leaves in autumn!!
Thank you very much for another beautiful article, Sapphire!
I found the book "The Secret Life Of Plants" in a box at a road when I was ca. 14 (in the 1990ies), someone had not wanted their books anymore, and it made all the sense in the world to me back then. One of those books that are a bit like a secret ally in a society in which people didn't really connect with nature anymore. The experiment with the plants giving out signs of stress may seem exaggerated or improper science to some, but on the level of Quantummechanics it makes scientific sense, after all (individual plantlives, too, being composed of electromagnetical matrixes - without a brain, but with another type of nervous system [the plant's soul]).
You are the first person to bring this book up, in my life, otherwise it was me who used to bring it up to others especially in my teenage times - so thank you very much for that specialness of memory also!
"Les Feuilles Mortes" used to be one of my "hymns" of my teenage years as well. My favourite two versions were by Natalie Cole and Edith Piaf. One of those songs that would bring me home heartwise...
And your photos, a delight, again and again... : )) I love the photo with the traditionally dressed ladies. Is there a story behind these dresses in that setting? :-)

Thanks!! Bingo. I thought you must have read the book. Though I don't think all the contents are good(some must be pseudo-scientific and some may have been based on inadequate experiments), I think it has an important clue to find out what the plant kingdom really is. Yes! "another type of nervous system" That's it!
I love the Edith Piaf version too.
They wear kimonos called "Furisode(振袖)literally, swinging sleeves”.
I suppose you can see very long sleeves in the photo. The Furisode is the most formal style of kimono worn by unmarried women in Japan. The ladies attended a wedding reception which was held at a hotel near the park. After it, they were strolling in the park. They were all pretty and they were willing to have their photo taken.
I let them know my blog so perhaps some of them will read this post.

i think everything is alive and sentient...all part of the same whole. and it seems that even science comes to this conclusion eventually...
the photos of plants you post always do something beautiful for my mood! thank you, sapphire!
sapphire, have you read, 'The Source Field Investigations?'

Thanks, zoe!!
"it seems that even science comes to this conclusion eventually..."
Yes. I agree. I'm really looking forward to it!!

I have not yet read it. I checked out Amazon and discovered it. It looks interesting! Thanks, suze for letting me know the new book.
The introductory chapters have an extensive section on telepathic communication with plant life. I found it quite intriguing.
The young ladies have a lot of class!
I've been always talking to flowers...just because I love them so much! And then...why do we feel so good when in natural sourroundings, in a park or in a garden? Does this have anything to do with the good vibrations coming from plants? I personally believe it does!
And...isn't autumn the best season of the year? Yessss, it is! First day of December today, it is cold (only 8 deg.C at maximum in the Yokohama area) and raining, but the trees opposite my highrise, in the grove, look so colourful! Vivid reds and oranges and yellows sunk in a sea of green. And...the camellia sassanqua trees are in full bloom! What a show! Soon, maybe next week, we'll go "momijigari" as we have plenty of kaede and momiji in this big park in which we reside here, in suburban Kanagawa.
Nature is by far much stronger than we are...AFTER THE PEOPLE it will cover everything and get healthier. So, we should try to know more about plants, get closer to them and enjoy them....then they might really "talk" to us (?!)
Beautiful photos as always and an interesting, challenging topic.
Hej Sapphire,
yea, I see what you mean. :-) The book was at parts based on the emotional reception of the author, which I remember had the effect of veiling rather than laying open (scientific = laying knowledge open). But since I find the emotional process of writers interesting to analyze, I didn't mind because I filter different categories of "scientific treatments" right away without having the expectation that a text has to be a certain way.
I'm one of those people who speak with their plants - lately my basil has captured my heart, so I gave it a big tender smooch the other day, pouring my love onto it. *g* Plants are so cool! Life from a bit of soil and water and light... that's amazing, when one really thinks about it.
Thank you for explaining the Furisode. I enjoy how in Japan people still use traditional clothing for expressing purposes, and in such a cultivated artistical way.
I’ve had the same idea with Gabriella that “good vibrations coming from the plants....” 美しい自然を見て感動するとき、私の心が自発的に感動してふるえているのでなく、草木花のふるえに私の心が共鳴してふるえているのだと思います。その反対に、草木も私たちの歌や言葉に共鳴しているのでしょうか。 Thank you for the interesting, thought-provoking post, Sapphire. Your photos are fabulous as always.

Thanks! As you say, I believe that it is the love for plants that will lead us to more understanding of them. Without love, people cannnot have sense of peacefulness and companionship with their plants that resonates on a cellular level.
"they might really "talk" to us" Yes.I'm sure they sometimes do!
As for momiji-gari, I think maple leaves will be the most beautiful next week in Kanto. Looking forward to your lovely photos of them!!

I can fully understand what you mean. And you are so right; "Life from a bit of soil and water and light... that's amazing" I in fact respect plants though it may sound a little strange to you...
If you are interested in kimonos, I wrote a post about a traditional wedding which was held at Meiji Jingu Shrine. A bride was in traditional wedding robes.

"good vibrations coming from the plants" Yes. plants really have good and peaceful vibrations.
なんか変わった記事で戸惑われたのではないでしょうか。私、不思議なことにいつも興味があるほうで....
Dear Sapphire,
as always I haven't read the comments before, so please be patient if I involuntarily repeat something said above.
I absolutely believe that plants can feel something. They are living beings, so why should they not? Whether they understand what I say - I don't know, but when I told my clump of not flowering hemerocallis after five years "Next year I will throw you out if you don't bloom" - they obediently did so, feeling that I really meant it (though in orange - which I had asked them please not to - but that was their nature :-) If I trod on a plant or by bad chance broke a twig, I said "Sorry" - and at least I felt better. And when we had to let the big fir fell, I did a little Feng Shui magic before (you can read that under www.gardeninginhighheels.blogspot.com - "tree murder" - way back in 2010).
In earnest: I believe that plants have a sort of soul. I believe one can communicate. They have an aura, and who thinks that is weird of me will never believe that places have an aura too. Though they do have.
I have heard that trees communicate with one another but I'd find it hard to believe they could with us. Still, we could all learn from how well plants and trees adapt to and improve their environment. Your images are lovely.
really magic... just beautiful..
ciao
I think plants do feel and understand our emotions to a certain level. There has also been some idea that plants respond well to music and their growth has improved. It is hard not to believe when they are so vibrantly alive and go through the seasonal changes year after year, providing us a kaleidoscope of visual treats! Very interesting blog and lovely colors!
Britta
Thanks for your intriguing comment. I too feel some plants and trees can respond to my thoughts though it's just a feeling without any scientific supports. I agree; plants as well as inanimate beings such as stones have auras. They are gleaming and really beautiful. Everything is energy, isn't it?. While people tend to only think about their own vision and eyesight, eyes work in all kinds of different ways, allowing some animals to see in ways that humans can only imagine. I would think human eye works(or brain works?) also differ from one person to another.
Sarah
Thanks! I always very much appreciate different views. I think they are very important because they can bring balance into one-sided way of looking at things!!
Massimo
Welcome and thanks for commenting!
Ruby
Welcome and thanks for your lovely comment. "plants respond well to music and their growth has improved" That's right. I once visited Tohoku Pioneer Co. in Yamagata Prefecture where they grew plants(including roses) in greenhouses letting them listen to classical music such as Mozart. Music works!!
Mmm, a very thought-provoking post. The literature on whether or not plants respond to music (or being talked to) goes back a way. Charles Darwin is said to have played his bassoon to a mimosa, to see if it would curl its leaves in response. A (dare we say) groovy experiment but, alas, the plant ignored him .... :(
How beautiful and sensitive post dear Sapphire, I really enjoyed reading it. The quote "Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. -Albert Camus" is so liberating. The beauty and the connection with everything around us is always there if we dare to see. Plants are helping us breathe...
Hyakumeizan
Your comment is so funny. Oh Charles Darwin expected too much. He may have ignored the dignity of the mimosa or his bassoon may have been pathetic.
Joking aside, as for the influence of music on plants, I guess it is necesary to do more experiments, for the results must be independently replicated... Thanks for reading this post!
Vesna
Thanks! I love the quote too. I suppose it is warmer here than in your country. At present autumn leaves are so beautiful though it is December...
Personally, I think the problem with Charles Darwin's experiment is that he didn't play the sax. Surely the mimosa isn't in existence that would not, as it were, dig that...
A beautiful post, Sapphire! I think all things interact, and the extent of that interaction is yet to be determined. I definitely think plants feel a touch, but perhaps not in the human capacity, which begs the question because humans define feeling.
Thank you for a lovely half hour of Memory Lane Music. Eric Clapton's "Autumn Leaves" is a big favorite but so is Doris Day's version. Way back when there was a TV program called The Hit Parade". I believe Giselle McKenzie sang "Autumn Leaves" on par with Doris Day. And, how could I not conclude with a bit of Patsy Cline? OMG, what a voice she had!
Hyakumeizan
Hmmmm the sax or the clarinet would have been better....
Kittie
"humans define feeling" I think so too. Humans are wonderful creatures with amazing abilities; however, I guess this blinds many people to the limitations of perceptions. As for uv rays, humans cannot percieve them but birds can see ultraviolet light.
What you cannot see does not always mean that it doesn't exist...
And thank you for letting me know about Giselle McKenzie "Autumn Leaves"!! I'd love to listen to it!!
Ooh, thank you for the hint, Sapphire. I will check out the post (about kimonos)! : )))
Sapphire,
This is so interesting and intriguing and new to me. Each plant has each life definitely, but I had never thought I can interact with the plants. I had thought if I love and take care of them more, they look better responding to my affection. But it look like they are responding, and just I see the reflections of my feelings or affections towards them. Just like 唯識論, When we are happy, the moon looks happy. When we are sad, the moon looks sad. Something like this. But I was amazed with the unique sounds made by plants through the gadget. Now I want to listen to the voices of the amazing trees which I wrote about in my blog. What kind of voices they have and what they are going to tell me. I am wondering if they can communicate each other. Thanks a lot as I got to have one more pleasure that someday I will be able to interact with them.
Have a nice weekend!

Dear friend! A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too! And...the most silly thing...I've already caught that cold ;O) At the moment I'm in bed and wont be going home this Christmas ;O(

Oh that's too bad. Stay warm, sleep a lot and try some medication then you 'll be able to go home before the New Year.
Best wishes for a quick recovery. Many hugs!
