2012, the year of the dragon -Oriental dragons in art

2012 has started. I wish you all the best for the new year! It is the year of the dragon for many countries in the East. I bought a small dragon figurine last December and have placed it on a shelf along with some lucky cats. Every year during the new year's holiday, I decorate my house with an ornament which represents the year's zodiac sign.

I suppose this dragon doesn’t look dignified or fearful at all. Instead it looks quite cute or kawaii. This type of cute dragon has become trendy in recent years and most of the dragon ornaments at stores lack majesty. Japan’s kawaii culture, spear-headed by Hello Kitty, seems to have invaded the sphere of the dragon and deprived the mythical creature of its solemnity.

I believe that the most fantastic living dragon in the world is the leafy seadragon that lives in Australia’s southern waters. I once saw two of them at an aquarium in Tokyo and found them very cool! The leafy seadragon, a relative of the seahorse, is a marine fish which has the ability to camouflage itself.

Though it looks like recent dragons are designed with kawaisa (cuteness) in mind which can sometimes make them look cheap, Eastern dragons, which are otherwise known as Ryu(龍)or lóng(Chinese), have stayed majestic and august in traditional art. These are some of the Oriental dragons on display at Tokyo National Museum during the New Year’s holidays.

It is really fun to visit the museum in the new year's first week. You can see not only special new year's exhibits which feature the year’s zodiac sign but also many fantastic performances such as Lion Dances(獅子舞)Taiko (Japanese drum) performances, and this year, Golden Dragon Dances (金龍の舞) outside the galleries. Adults (1000 people) can even taste a cup of sake (Japanese rice wine) for free during the week.

Since the late 1990s, national museums have been transferred to independent administrative agencies. This change has required them to support themselves more on the financial front. As a result, the museum has stepped up its campaigns to attract more visitors: you see lots of such posters at stations, in trains, and in newspapers besides its TV commercials. I’m very glad that the museum has become more enticing with many interesting events and lectures for both adults and children.

Hatsumoude originally meant New Year’s visits to shrines.
Hmmm it looks like the museum has a rivalry with famous Tokyo shrines
such as Meiji Jingu Shrine.

I read the first three books from the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. It is a fantasy +science fiction series which Sarah recommended to me last year. It is a fascinating tale of dragons in which they are portrayed in a positive light as intelligent, telepathic flying creatures. I found the setting of the tale really great: A distant planet Pern where a lost Earth colony has regressed to a feudalistic society where the humans can communicate with fire-breathing dragons. Pern is threatened by Thread, a weird life form that falls like rain from Pern's sister planet.

                 1. Dragonflight   2. Dragonquest  3. The White Dragon

In the three books, Macaffrey doesn’t veer from what we are so familiar with in fairy tales; a strong male character saves a noble princess in distress. I also found that the society on Pern is very male dominant. I have no idea whether it is because the first novel of the series was written in 1967 or because it is set in a kind of medieval feudalistic society. In this respect, I suppose some of you may feel irritated by it while some may like it. Whether you like it or not, the trilogy is really fantastic. I look forward very much to its 2013 film adaptation.

On Ginza streets, many lights called “Wings of Hope”have been set up for the winter holidays in the hope of Tohoku's revival. On the globes, you can see drawings by the children from the affected areas. The number of neon lights was much smaller than last year in order to save power.

May 2012 be a good year for you and us!

These are superb photos of dragon, i particularly love the signs on the buildings and the various paintings. Not very fond of hello Kitty though...
I wish you a very happy and healthy year 2012 and look forward to many more of your superb posts.

I don't know a lot of things about zodiac signs but I believe that each sign brings good things so I hope the year of the Dragon will bring peace and harmony in the world.

I love cats but dragons have something special. They are fascinating, courageous, rebellious and unpredictable. They give off an incredible force. They represent the power, the mysterious, the unknown, the untouchable. What I can say, I love dragons!

During my next vacation, I will try the three books you have suggested; they seems good! Thank you for all the beautiful pictures and ideas; a small dragon is missing on my chimney.

Have a good day Sapphire,

The wings of hope are just beautiful, sapphire.

A very happy new year to you, my friend. As always, I took away much from your post (and particularly liked your description of non-kawaii dragons as majestic and august.)

Sapphire, we saw the leafy seahorse dragon at the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. I was child-like, watching it move/feed. The Hello Kitty influenced dragon is really cute; however, I sense you also have mixed feelings about traditions changing.

Yes, the Bourbon Orleans fronts Bourbon Street. We stayed on the quieter Orleans Street side. Actually, Bourbon Street is fun with street musicians and so on. But, one shouldn't fall into the tourist drinking trap. We natives don't understand why quiet, very conservative people come to NO and go totally wild.

As always, your photos are beautiful. You know, I wish more countries would turn down the lights as a combined effort would do much to help our planet.

Thanks! "kawaii culture", including Hello Kitty has become so common in our society that I sometimes wonder what it is.....(I in fact have many kawaii goods..)

Mésange

Glad that you love dragons. I personally think that they are really really interesting mythologically, culturally, and artistically. Have a good day, too.
The trilogy is a good read if you love dragons.

Ruby

Thanks! Best wishes!

Suze

Non-kawaii dragons seem to have a tough game at stores nowadays in Japan. Best wishes!

Kittie

Yes. The leafies are indescribably marvelous! I have been thinking about what we call "kawaii phenomenon" recently. It looks like it has a big influence on various fields...
Thanks for the tip about the Burbon Street. I've never been there but I'm very interested in it because Sting has a very beautiful song, "Moon Over Burbon Street"(smile).

Hi Sapphire

This is such a full post. Thank you for the leafy sea dragon treat - he is so beautiful and I loved to hear of their habits and monogamous relationships. I found it sweet that the diver had named the dragons under the pier.

I just found out via Keiko that I have dragon fire in me. I was born in a year of the dragon...now that's why I am so feisty...perhaps...

thanks for the great story line, images and sights...

The sea dragon is very cool. I seem to remember reading about them but had forgotten they existed. So graceful just like sea horses. I wish you a very Happy New Year!

and peonies are such gorgeous flowers. thank you for this post!

Great post, and very interesting related posts, too. Hear, hear on Hello Kitty cuteness (yecchh)! I think of dragons as archetypes, from which we can derive power. Not much power in those Hello Kitty dragons, eh?

The Leafy Seadragon must be Australia's national treasure!
As you know I once had a hard time identifying the names of the fish in Australia's seas.I was severely
scolded by the curators at the aquarium where I saw the creatures in person(grin). May the year of the dragon be happy and successful to you!

tina

So glad to hear that you love the seadragons. When I saw them for the first time at the aquarium,
I was really impressed with them. How awesome God's designs are!
Best wishes!!

zoe

First time to see them? I was once engaged in a project in which I learned about their mode of life. They are really extraordinary creatures. the taiko show was very energetic! Thanks for your comment. I'm glad that you are fine now!

Marc

Thanks so much, Marc. Yes. You are so right. I'm afraid Kawaii dragons have offended Ryujin, Dragon god. "Are you making a fool of me?" he roars...(grin)

明けましてお目出度うございます。去年はいろいろ教えて頂きまして、今年もよろしくお願いいたします。。

I was much amused by your observation that there are two kinds of dragon - the cute "kawaii" kind, and the serious kind, which knock down skyscrapers with one whisk of their tails. Maybe it's the same with Hello Kitty - perhaps on her off days she morphs into a mountain wildcat or a panther or a leopard. Terrifying thought. But perhaps a great subject for a future post - the Secret Life and Alter Ego of Hello Kitty ....

Well, that's probably enough for the evening. Look forward to the next post.

It is a kind of mystery why Hello Kitty has been so popular. The Kawaii culture certainly has a lot to with her. And it perhaps partly reflects how our society is. "perhaps on her off days she morphs into a mountain wildcat or a panther or a leopard" Yes. she must have her Alter Ego which has not been clearly revealed or has not become active so far though.
Did you know Toru Hashimoto, the Mayor of Osaka city? He looked a bit like a Hello Kitty when he appeared in TV variety shows several years ago but now he is a mountain wildcat itself!! こちらこそいつも教えていただいて感謝しております。Looking forward to your further posts too!

Thanks so much! Take good care of yourself! Best wishes!

Happy Dragon year to you! I’m so glad you enjoyed the Dragon Rider series too. Another one you might enjoy in that series is Moretta; it has a more feminist bend to it.

All these dragons are pleasant because they are fantastic creatures and artists can represent them according to their imagination. I wish you a beautiful and happy new year and I hope that this dragon year will give everybody enthusiasm, courage, strength and good passions (as it seems to me that it may be a dragon character, but perhaps I am wrong).

☆sapphire said...

Sarah

Thanks so much for letting me know the Pern series last year. It was a great read indeed. Oh Moretta! I've not read it yet. I'll check it out. Best wishes!!

Anne

WOW! You are so right!! It is precisely a 壬辰 year: 壬(yang water) + 辰(辰 also means 龍, ryu, dragon) year. The dragon year acutually has 10 different features in it. It is a common misconception that the animals assigned by year are the only signs. The color black symbolizes "water" so South Korea now celebrates 2012 as a Black Dragon Year. Their definition of the year is more precise than us. Best wishes!!

Rouchswalwe

Oh....You're a genuine dragon lady!! The dragon daughter of a dragon mother! As Anne has said, the dragon symbolizes strength, passion and courage, may 2012 be
a great year for you!

Dear Sapphire,
I wish you a happy new year!
Your post on the Year of the Dragon is wonderful - I love dragons as long as I can think back. Do you know the charming and wise story about a little dragon in Tove Jansson's Moomin Tales? (The dragon, though caught by little Moomin troll, is searching the presence of Mumrik, Moomin troll's best friend - and Mumrik, feeling the helpless jealousy, secretly sets the dragon free, to make his friend feel comfortable again).
In our Japanese store here in Berlin I saw only those 'softened' dragon versions - but I will put a Meissen vase on my window sill (inside, of course :-) - there is a beautiful majestic dragon on it, and you might see the photograph tomorrow on "Britta's Happiness of the Day".
The film about that little water draggon was very remarkable - till this minute I didn't knew that this beautiful creature existed, thank you for showing me!
My best wishes to all for the Year of the Dragon! Britta

El dragón caballito! Yea. recent Japanese dragons look like horses!
Wishing you all the best for 2012!! Thank you!

Britta

Oh I can't wait to read your next post! I would think that dragons should be majestic and beautiful like the one that you describe as "a majestic beautiful dragon" on your vase. And thank you for letting me know about the little dragon in Tove Jansson's Moomin Tales. It was a long time ago when I read the Moomin series. I'd like to read it once again, especially the little dragon tale. Best wishes for 2012!!

Sapphire,
What a great, great blog!! Dragon story is almost endless for Japanese and Asian people. Contrast between Kitty and the dragon is so humorous, cute and I love it. In your comment, you said Korea is celebrating the year of Black Dragon; this is a new information for me. They are practicing 十干and 十二支both!!
How many antennas do you have?? Amazing!
Thanks a lot for such an enormous information and super-interesting stories. I enjoyed so much.

Yes, how cool leafy seadragons are!I was glued to the video.
Visiting museum during New Year holidays was not on my what-to-do list. I didn't know there were such colorful New Year events. I usually followed the same old routines to spend so it must be a good idea to take advantage of New Year benefits.

I really enjoyed your blog as always. Thank you, sapphire.

I’m so glad to see you on this blog, sapphire. I’m sorry I seem to have missed the time of your comeback. I enjoyed this post with great interests as always. Leafy Seadragon is so charming!

Do you know the “ryu” at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto? I once posted about it, mainly about its gardens. When you have time and if feel inclined to, please have a visit through the label “dragon”.

Thank you so much for your comment. As for the Ryu in the Tenryuji-temple, I saw the one created by Suzuki Shonen(鈴木松年)when I was a student. He was the first teacher of Uemura Shoen, wasn't he? (he must have been the father of Uemura Shoko(grin). I've heard that the Ryu painting by him has been considerably damaged. I suppose you saw the one created by Kayama Matazo. I haven't seen it yet.

今年は寒いですね。こちらこそご挨拶が遅くなりました。忙しくてコメントいただいた方に返すのが精一杯でまだそちらへ伺っておりません。伺うのを楽しみにしています。本年も宜しくお願い申し上げます。

Hej Sapphire,

first of all h a p p y N e w Y e a r !! I hope 2012 has treated you nicely so far.

Your photos are more than awesome in this post, I instantly want to beam myself to Japan, no kidding. Maybe this is also enhanced by my love for dragons. : ))

The dragon you bought is very cute. It looks like it will bring you joy throughout this year. And what a neat ritual, to buy a symbol of the zodiac sign for the year. That's great!

The first dragon of the Tokyo National Museum images you have put on display reminds me of a (friendly) dragon I dreamt of a few years ago. :o)

Creatures like the Leafy Sea Dragon are totally astounding. Their mimikry shows how perfect nature plans everything (according to Golden Means). Nature is a real mastermind, isn't she... (or maybe one should say "she-he").

Thanks for another beautiful, inspiring article, Madame Sapphire!

All the best

Happy New Year to you too!
I've been wondering if you are doing fine. So glad to see you again. The first dragon(the museum's) doesn't look scary but instead it looks quite humorous or friendly. In fact those in museums are not so majestic as the ones you see on the ceilings of large Zen temples such as Myoshin-ji, Shokou-ji and so on.

I've written in my latest post my reply to your questions you asked last year about red wedding kimonos. Sorry for being late in posting. I don't think it is good and satisfactory, though. If you have time, take a glance at it.

All the best for 2012!

Glad to be back, too! I really look forward to reading your article on "Red"! I will this evening!

Thanks for thinking of me. I was in hospital for a surgery, but am doing better every day, which is great! I will soon resume writing blog articles. Right now I'm taking a break.

Lots of Love out to you,

Dear Defer

Oh that's too bad. Very surprised to hear that you were in hospital. How are you feeling now? I'm a little relieved to hear that you are getting better every day. Stay warm, eat nutritious food, and get enough sleep. Please don't think that you have to read the RED post. What you need now is enough rest. I really hope that you'll take good care of yourself! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Many Hugs!!
