I couldn't help smiling when I saw this Wassily Kandinsky painting
titled "the Whole” at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) during the New Year’s
holiday. It was hung on a wall in a prominent place. As the painting
features several snakes or snake-like lines, the museum must have thought that
it was suitable to be on display for 2013, the year of the snake. The painting
was really lovely and looked like a kind of mandala.

Speaking of snakes, my old house in my hometown was inhabited by a snake when I
was a small kid. Though my parents, sister, and I had
never seen it with our own eyes, we knew that it definitely resided in
the ceiling under the roof. We would often hear the noise it made when it
slithered at night, shrrr, shrrr, from above. My
father would say that the snake was much better than rats in the ceiling. He was
so right. The invisible creature was totally harmless, behaved itself, and seemed to have driven out all the long-tailed former inhabitants in the ceiling. Every now and then during summer and autumn we would find its skin cast off somewhere in the garden, sometimes in the grass and
sometimes around the pomegranate tree. Light, dried, fragile, and almost sheer with a swirling pattern on it, the odd thing looked really magical.

Near the museum in the garden of Kan'eiji-temple, winter
peonies were at their best. The weather was fine during the first three days of
the year but we had the first snow yesterday. The tiny straw huts over the peonies must have helped a lot to protect the floweres from the snow.
Just like our new Prime Minister, Mr. Abe, mentioned at his first press conference, it is said that the year of the snake symbolizes prosperous business. Best wishes to you all for 2013!

And best wishes to you too! Love the snake in the ceiling story. Yes, much better than rodents!
Your post is a glimmer of sunshine on this dank day, Sapphire. I knew triangles represented a snake's skin as there is a similar analogy in South Louisiana. Since it's a water-logged, snake-filled area, triangular patterns were never popular, either on decorations or clothing. So, as I wrote the first chapter of my next novella, I had one of the characters wear a sundress with a bright triangular print for those with clever eyes to pick up on, a little slight of hand (and my dry sense of humor).
When I lived on Okinawa, I was pleasantly surprised many times by the cultural similarities. It was also the beginning of my interest in cultural anthropology. I find it beyond interesting how so much came to be in disparate parts of the world.
And may 2013 be prosperous for you as well!
Happy New and Prosperous Snake Year, dear Sapphire.
Thanks a lot for your kind comment and your brand new post with the charming snake tale from your childhood. I'm looking forward to reading and looking to many great posts from you, dear blog friend from Japan!
Uwe, born dragon(heart).
My dear friend, I wish you a Happy New Year, too! I hope the new year will bring you many happy hours, good health and joy to you and your family! I so enjoyed reading about your childhood's snake...in my father's house a marten lives in the attic...at night one can hear its tiny feet running from one end of the house to the other...well, it is not so good as it nests up there and spoil the isolation/other things. But a snake...I say! Many good wishes, Mette

Best wishes to you too! The old house had been inhabited by rodents...

"one of the characters wear a sundress with a bright triangular print"sounds very interesting! It is true that the clothes we wear represent the reflection of who we really are. Looking forward to your next novel! I suppose that it's obvious that Okinawan culture is different from that of mainland Japan and the differences between Okinawa and Mainland Japan can be compared to those between Hawaii and Mainland USA. You mentioned the cultural similarities. How intriguing!

Happy New Year to you too! I wish you good health, happiness, and success in 2013!
So, you are a dragon. I'm a tiger.
Dear Mette
I wish you good health, happiness, and lovely hours in 2013!!
Your father's marten reminds me of a Japanese mink who once lived in my father's barn. I once saw it run on the fence. As we lived at the foot of the Rokko mountains, there were many wild animals around us.
Bom Ano Novo!!!!

Oh I so love the pattern in the kimono. I admire you for sharing your house with a snake. You are a much braver woman than I. I agree they are harmless and reason tells me such, however, the fierce stories we were told in Ireland(free of snakes) as children have made me take leave of my senses.
Wishing you much success in 2013 and thank you for the kind wishes
Helen xx
Dear Sapphire,
thank you and best wishes to you too!
To have had a house-snake: how exciting! I never could understand people who abhor snakes - I would keep safe distance, yes - but I think they are elegant and beautiful. And I remember my surprise when we were allowed in a zoo to touch very big snakes (boas?) - their skin felt warm and like velvet, very surprising when I expected something cold like a fish.
Oh: I've never seen winter peonies - they look so beautiful!

Happy New Year to you too! wishing you good luck, good health, and happiness in 2013!

Best wishes to you for 2013!! So, Ireland is a snake-free country. I think that it is good to have no snakes because they look spooky, anyway. There are 8 types of snakes in Mainland Japan. Most of them are not venomous. My father thought it sinful for humans to kill harmless creatures just because they look spooky. To be honest, the shrrrr, shrrr made me feel a little bit scary.
Dear Britta
"we were allowed in a zoo to touch very big snakes (boas?)"Oh, how exciting! I really enjoyed reading your experience in the zoo. I've never touched one so far. I suppose you know well that the snake or serpent has been a powerful symbol and totem throughout history and all cultures where snakes are present. When it comes to symbolism in general, the snake has a lot of different meanings. How interesting!!
Now that it's weekend and I've survived the usual mid-week madness, I can catch up with everybody! ^^
All the best for 2013, Sapphire! May it be a year of prosperous posts and friendly ceiling snakes! ;)
Hi,
It is always a pleasure to read your articles! And so beautiful and lovely photos!
Wish you a Happy New Year with health and happiness!
Kind regards from Romania,

私の知り合いで、蛇より猫の方が嫌いだという人がいますが、まあ見た目だけで好き嫌いを決めてしまって、本質を見ていない事は往々にしてありますね^^;
I kept snakes as pets as a kid (the first one I caught myself), but hearing snakes slithering over the bedroom ceiling would be unsettling. I like how your father calmed you with wise words. Lovely peonies. Happy Year of the Snake!

Thanks for reading this post. Yes. hearing snakes slithering over the living room ceiling was unsettling! My sister and I felt scared. Love the story of your pet snake!!
